Chapter 7
Gracie stuck the key in
the door knob to lock the door to the room after they were both out.
She grabbed the knob and tried to turn it to make sure it was secure. "I
like to lock even though I'm just going down stairs. I guess I'm
paranoid." She tucked her key back in her purse. What she said made
David imagine someone trying to break into their room even though it
seemed very unlikely at this time of day.
David looked around the hall way. It looked a lot different in the light of day. It was darker then the room, but the slivers of light casting on the carpet all the way down the hall gave it just enough light to see everything. Gracie got herself together. "Now that it's daytime we can see thing much better." she reasoned. She moved a couple step then stopped. "Hmm, let me see." she put her pointer finger to her chin. David watched her think. "Come on, I know where we need to go first." She started down the hallway in the opposite direction that they came from last night. David followed. He curously peeked into some of the rooms as they passed them. "This place is a real gem. Sometimes I find myself...." She went on and on talking about the place non stop and she seemed to be in a inthralled state with what she was saying. David couldn't help but be distracted by the rooms and some of the odd things he saw in them.
"What's in those rooms?" David managed to say in the middle of Gracie's rant. He had caught her off guard.
"Oh yeah we'll get back to those." Gracie said in a slower, more non-interested tone of voice. "Right now I want to show you the stuff downstairs." Then she jumped right back into her rant about the place. David followed her and gathered what his eyes could see in the rooms as they passed them.
They got to the end of the hallway. Gracie turned and stopped at the top of another flight of torn up stairs. She put her hand on the banister.
"Now be careful, these stairs are just as bad as the other ones." David came into the opening. He saw the dilapidated stair case to the left and a wider hallway that led down the back of the hotel to the right. What caught his eye the most was the an elevator door that was open in the other hallway.
There was a little debris at the bottom of the elevator door. It served as almost a safety blockade, keeping someone from falling into the elevator shaft. It's darkness look omanis to David and with everything else brighter around it, it seemed that the darkness of the night before had found a place to survive in that spot.
"Wheres the elevator." David asked pointing to it.

Gracie's smile turned to
a frown as she looked at the black dark shaft. She momentarily shut her
eyes and rolled her head in disgust. "There's nothing interesting about
that, come on....
David couldn't help but walk over and look down the shaft. He walked over and kicked some of the junk away so he could get closer to the edge. He looked down into the blackness of the shaft. He stuck his head in further very slowly like he was creeping up on a dangerous animal. He wanted to see something down in the hole so he could shake the feeling that it was just an endless dark pit to nowhere, but all he could see is black. Gracie walked over to him like she was jealous of the elevator shaft for taking Davids attention away from her.
"Come on lets go down stairs." She yanked on Davids cuff. But Davids attention couldn't be drawn away.
"Wheres the elevator?" David asked again. Gracie's focus turned toward the black hole reluctantly as if Davids question forced it too.
"I don't know... probably at the bottom." They both just looked in. Gracie's attitude turned back into taunting David to forget about it. "I don't really care, this thing is creepy.. come on lets go!" she had a hold of Davids sleeve again and was now leaning to the side, using her weight to pull David away from the elevator shaft. She succeeded and they started walking down the rickety stair case.
